At present, perhaps one of the more exciting and well-received products for landscaping is artificial turf. In the advent of environmental awareness, particularly water conservation, this lawn solution has little to no water consumption (except when cleaning). It saves the owner thousands of gallons per year compared to using real grass. Though it certainly has several excellent wins, there are still downsides to using fabricated pastures. Some of the pros and cons are listed below, so read on.

First, and probably the most glaring, advantage is the huge savings on water. As discussed above, it needs practically no watering so you save on your bills and you help preserve the environment. Artificial turfs are also very easy to maintain. Aside from the occasional washing down due to accumulation of dirt, no mowing is necessary so you save on energy (for manual lawnmowers) and gasoline (for machine powered equipment).

Except when soiled, it also looks green all the time. There won't be any brown spots or pestering bugs. Furthermore, it requires no re-seeding. Likewise, you will never have to worry about the sun, shade, roots, soil or any other issues with growing natural grass.

Synthetic turfs are perfect for special sports and recreation areas like putting greens, tennis courts, playgrounds and many others. Not to mention that it is quite easy to install.

On the other side of the coin, these are some of the concerns many people have about non-natural grass. First, this solution is a bit expensive. If you keep it long enough, however, the purchase and installation costs would balance out with the water and maintenance savings. It may be quite an investment at first but in the long run you will recover the outlay with the decrease in expenses.

Another major concern anti-synthetic advocates are raising would be the growing question on hygiene. Especially on fields where there is heavy game play or where animals romp and infants and toddlers crawl, the buildup of germs and other microorganisms may have disturbing repercussions on health and safety. Moreover, to maintain the green color some artificial turf manufacturers use excessive amounts of lead. As many of us know, lead is a huge hazard on mental health and development of humans and perhaps even animals.

Therefore, consider the use of the lawn. If any of the downsides mentioned would not pose as a problem then synthetic grass may be the right solution to your lawn needs.
